After Submitting a Request: What Should You Do ?
We explain the steps you need to follow below

Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) Request

In most cases, applicants will receive a confirmation from CIC within minutes. However, some requests may require more time to process. If this is the case for your request, you should receive an email from CIC within 72 hours of submitting your request, which will explain the next steps.

Change of Email Address

If you change your email address after submitting an ETA request, you must update your email address online.

After Receiving Your ETA

You will be notified by email once your ETA has been approved. Your ETA is linked to the passport you used for your ETA request. You will need to present the passport you used for your ETA application to the airline staff every time you board a flight.

Your ETA allows you to visit Canada for up to six months or until the date set by the border services officer upon your arrival in Canada. If you need to stay longer in Canada, you will need to apply for a stay extension.

Once you receive your ETA, it will be valid for five years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.

Note : A valid ETA and travel document (passport) will facilitate your entry to Canada. When you arrive at the border, a border services officer will ask to see your passport or travel documents and ask you a few questions. They will then decide if you can enter Canada.

Visitor Visa Application

Most visitor visa applications (temporary resident visas) are processed within a few weeks or less. Processing times vary by visa office.

Processing Your Visa Application

Once you have submitted your application, the visa office will check that it is complete and accompanied by all the required documents. If your application is incomplete, it will not be processed and will be returned to you.

If your application is complete, the visa office may ask for the following:

Medical Examination
You may be required to undergo a medical examination to be allowed to enter Canada. If this is the case, the visa office will send you instructions. If a medical examination is required, processing your application may take longer, as you will need to schedule and attend an appointment, and the doctor will need time to send the results to Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

Police Certificate
You may be asked to provide a police certificate for yourself and for any family members aged 18 or older who will accompany you to Canada. The visa office will contact you if a police certificate is required.

Interview
If a visa officer decides an interview is necessary, the visa office will contact you with the date and location of the interview. Most decisions are made without an interview.

Returning Your Documents

Once the visa officer has reviewed your application, your passport and other original documents will be returned to you.

Please note that original bank statements will not be returned.

If you have submitted fraudulent documents, they will not be returned.

If Your Application Is Approved
The visa will be stamped inside your passport.

If Your Application Is Refused
If your application is refused, you will receive an explanation.

Change of Address

If you move or change your address, phone number, or any other contact information after submitting your application, you must inform the Canadian visa office for the country or region where you live.

After Receiving a Visa

A valid visitor visa and travel document do not guarantee entry to Canada. A border services officer may determine that you are no longer eligible for one of the following reasons :

  • There has been a change to your file;
  • New information has been received about you (for example, you provided false or incomplete information in your visa application).
